About HBOT
How hyperbaric oxygen therapy works
Every cell in your body requires oxygen to remain healthy, repair itself and perform properly. HBOT delivers oxygen at greater pressure than at sea level — and that extra oxygen can reduce inflammation, stimulate the release of stem cells and generate new blood vessels. The result: faster recovery and improved overall function, with long-term benefits for many ailments, athletic performance and healthy ageing.
From breath to healing, step by step
-
Normal blood flow
The air we breathe is about 21 percent oxygen. Red blood cells, suspended in plasma, carry that oxygen through blood vessels all over the body, where it gradually diffuses into the surrounding tissue.
-
Restricted blood flow
Surgery, illness or an injury like a concussion can restrict blood flow. Plasma passes through, but red blood cells are blocked — and without oxygen, the tissue on the other side of the blockage starts to break down.
-
Oxygen under pressure
Breathing a high concentration of oxygen under pressure causes oxygen to not only attach to red blood cells but dissolve into the plasma itself. This oxygen-rich plasma can travel past blockages — even through the blood-brain barrier — and reach damaged tissue directly.
-
The healing process
Tissue with a high concentration of oxygen is more likely to generate new blood vessels. Oxygen-rich red blood cells begin to flow through these new vessels, delivering even more oxygen to damaged areas.
Our chamber
The latest hyperbaric technology, at 1.5 ATA
At our Ōakura clinic we use a hard-shell chamber operating at 1.5 ATA — gentle, comfortable pressure where you can lie back and relax for the full hour of your session. It isn't painful or scary; most people read, listen to podcasts, or simply rest.
Sessions run for 60 minutes, and how many you'll benefit from depends on your goals — we tailor every treatment plan to the person in the chamber.
Got questions about safety, comfort or funding? Our HBOT FAQ covers the lot.
